(I Read) Heaven's Bankers by Harris Irfan

My three takeaways from reading Heaven’s Bankers are:

  • Principles of islamic finance should be: fair, just, transparent, and harmonious
  • Islamic finance can’t solve issues of a society affected by riba when it exists within the riba-based system
  • Permissibility places too much emphasis on avoiding interest whilst neglecting social responsibility

I would classify this book as one I’ll read again over the course of my life because certain financing concepts are still blurry to me; no eureka moments where I can confidently say they’re ethical or unethical. There is a glossary section where all sorts of terms are explained although I would feel more comfortable with a practical example.

I like Harris Irfan’s explanation of fractional reserve banking, it really is newbie-friendly.
